Step treads may be used to create an entrance to the home, running up to the front door. Alternatively, they may be used to join different levels in a garden landscaping scheme.

What stone should be used for step treads and wall copings?

When building a garden landscape using stone paving materials, it is often necessary to create connections between levels and other parts of the garden by building steps into the design.

A far better finish will be achieved if stone materials are sourced that are both matched to the paving and have been fabricated for the specific purpose that they are going to be used.

At a good stone supplier a full range of suitable matching stone materials will be available.

Examples of available stone step treads

For instance, a patio laid using Raj Green sandstone paving, ideally requires Raj Green step treads to build stone steps.

At Stoneworld this is a stocked item. Various formats are available, from rounded stone steps to flat, depending on the style of the paving selected. However, in our opinion, the best one is definitely Summit Stone Extra Thick step treads in Raj Green.  This super thick sandstone format of 50mm thick is ideal used in landscapes where hand-cut or tumbled paving has been used. Each step tread has a straight fettled edge.  This creates an attractive and safe front face by removing the angular sharp edge that would be present on a regular paving slab. The extra thickness is also a feature which defines the step tread and sets it apart from standard paving products.

The extra thick format is also very attractive when used to edge terracing. In situations where the edge is viewable from other levels in the garden, this can create a properly finished edge.  Walls are also enhanced when extra thick format pavers are used as copings.

Bullnosed step treads are also stocked in both riven and sawn and sandblasted sandstone.

Bull nosed step treads are also the ideal material when creating a more formal entrance area at the front of the house.

York stone step treads are often used, and are available at Stoneworld. We can also show you a variety of alternative materials. White mint sandstone has been used on the steps illustrated below

More intricate designs where a bespoke step tread is required e.g curved steps, can be sourced from a stone supplier that has a masonry factory where stone cutting is offered as a service.

Edge profiling can be applied to many of our stone materials in various styles.  View edge profiling options here>>

The masonry workshop at Stoneworld can produce bespoke stone step treads to any design required.  We have invested in the latest stone cutting technology that enables stone cutting to be done accurately, ensuring a superb finish.

Curved step treads required an accurate curve calculation.  On the project below onsite digital templating ensured a perfect result.

Wall copings may also be created to sit on stone walls to create a neat finish.

In this project Moleanos limestone wall copings and step treads contrast with the Raj sandstone paving.  Wall coping stones can be finished with an edge profile on both sides.  This may be desirable in areas where the coping can be viewed from both sides.
