Gilded Cotswold Stone Sculpture

A stunning piece of public art carved out of a gilded Cotswold stone.

Sculptress Liz Middleton was commissioned by Crest Nicholson with Artscape to create a piece of public art for a new building development at Witney in Oxfordshire. This beautiful Standing Stone is a huge piece of gilded Cotswold Stone.

Liz Middleton is a local sculptor. She gained a commission to create a piece of public art at Colwell Green in Oxfordshire, where Crest Nicholson are developing a housing estate. Public art is being installed as part of the landscaping of the surrounding grounds.

Liz sourced her stone from the quarry, and Stoneworld organised collection of the 4 tonne rock for her, bringing it back to our site in Great Milton to work on in our masonry factory. Stoneworld were involved at many stages of this project due to our ability to work with large pieces of stone in our masonry factory.

The massive piece of  Cotswold Stone that she chose for the work needed stabilising before she could work on it.  We were able to to this by slicing a piece off the bottom, to create a stable flat base. This stone cutting work was done on our wire saw.

After the stone was cut and made able to stand upright on our yard, Liz chose the right elevation to cut an angular slice from. Again we were able to do this on the wire saw. Using our experience of moving and lifting heavy loads we then installed the piece at Colwell Green for Liz, where she then gilded the cut face of the stone.

It looks really beautiful in the sunlight, lovely work Liz.
