Can I order bespoke sizes or edge details for my paving?

Slate chippings are a versatile and visually striking landscaping material, widely used in planting beds, borders, and decorative ground cover areas across both contemporary and traditional garden styles. Their angular, irregular form and deep blue-grey colour make them particularly effective as a contrast to green planting or pale stone paving. However, when it comes to using slate chippings as a primary surface for paths and seating areas, there are important practical considerations around comfort, stability, and safety that need to be addressed at the design stage.

Loose aggregate surfaces can shift underfoot, making them less comfortable and potentially less safe for frequent pedestrian use, especially for elderly visitors or those with mobility considerations. Laying chippings at the correct depth, typically 50mm for decorative use, over a compacted sub-base with firm edge restraints helps improve stability and containment, but for higher-use routes most designers prefer to incorporate paved stepping stone routes through aggregate areas rather than relying on chippings alone. A slightly larger, more angular aggregate can also provide better interlock and resistance to displacement compared to fine or rounded chippings, making it a more practical choice where foot traffic is a regular consideration
