What is the best stone for external steps?

The “best” stone for external steps depends on the setting, expected traffic, exposure and the adjacent materials rather than a single universal choice. Limestone and sandstone steps can work very well in gardens and entrances when specified at appropriate thickness with a textured finish and good drainage, while denser stones or porcelain may be favoured for heavily used or poolside areas. How thick should stone step treads be?
