Landscaping Stone

Landscape stone gives structure, depth and texture to gardens in ways that paving alone cannot. Stoneworld’s landscape stone collection brings together rockery stone, decorative aggregates and handcrafted features that integrate naturally with our paving, walling and step ranges. Our rockery stone, including Yorkstone, Purbeck, slate and ironstone, is selected for characterful faces and stable bed surfaces, making it ideal for raised beds, banks, water features and naturalistic planting schemes. Pieces are available in a range of sizes so you can build anything from low retaining edges to bold boulder compositions, all using the same underlying material palette as the rest of the project. For designers working with more formal schemes, we can also provide dressed blocks and feature stones cut to size in our workshop.

We supply gravels, pebbles and slate chippings sourced directly from quarries, with stone purity and colour consistency prioritised so surfaces keep their appearance over time. These materials are used for paths, seating areas, mulch around planting, transition strips between paving types and visual emphasis around water or architectural elements.

Alongside bulk stone and aggregates, Stoneworld offers a range of landscape features and details. Handcrafted items such as carved spheres, stepping stones, troughs, edging pieces and bespoke stone signage can be produced to order, helping you anchor focal points or mark transitions between spaces. Because these features are made from the same families of stone as our paving and walling, they sit comfortably in both contemporary and traditional garden designs.

What is landscape stone used for?

Landscape stone covers everything in the garden that is not paving, walling or building envelope but still relies on stone for structure or emphasis. Typical uses include rockeries, retaining banks, outcrops, water features, raised beds, gravel gardens, paths, seating pockets and decorative margins that link hard surfaces to planting. In many projects, landscape stone is what ties together the architectural elements and the planting design into a coherent whole.

Can I match landscape stone with my paving and walling?

Yes, most Stoneworld landscape stone has been chosen to coordinate with key paving and walling ranges so the garden reads as one scheme rather than a collection of separate products. Rockery pieces, aggregates and feature stones can be selected to echo the tones and textures of main surfaces, or to provide a deliberate contrast where that supports the design intent. Our team can help you line up stone choices across paving, steps, walling and landscape stone at the same time, rather than treating each in isolation.

Technical guidance on specifying landscape stone

When specifying rockery and feature stone, considerations include stone type, size range, bed shape and how pieces will be combined with planting and structures. Larger boulders and feature stones often require early planning for access and foundations, so we recommend confirming lifting arrangements and bearing conditions with your contractor. For aggregates, factors such as stone size, angularity, colour, and suitability for foot traffic or vehicular use should be defined up front to avoid mismatches on site.

We source aggregates directly from quarries and use material grading that supports both visual quality and practical performance. Options span decorative gravels for light foot traffic, denser chippings for shared areas, and sub‑base materials such as scalpings, sand and cement that support the wider landscape build‑up. Our ability to combine these with paving, walling and step packages helps simplify procurement for landscape contractors and designers.

  • Are slate chippings suitable for paths and seating areas?

Slate chippings can work well in low‑speed pedestrian areas when laid at appropriate depth with a suitable sub‑base and edge restraint, though comfort underfoot and movement should be considered at design stage. For higher‑use paths, many designers pair aggregates with paved routes or use a slightly larger, more angular stone for stability.
