Project Overview

This exceptional Grade II-listed country estate underwent a comprehensive transformation, unifying the Manor House, a substantial new extension, six barn conversions, staff quarters, stables, and a Hartley Botanic greenhouse into one cohesive masterplan. The design, led by award-winning landscape designer Bradley Burgess, required hard landscaping materials that could match the ambition of the project: beautiful enough for a private estate of this calibre, and tough enough to perform across terraces, driveways, pool surrounds, and pathways used every day.

Drawing inspiration from The Newt in Somerset, the design weaves a curated colour journey across the estate, from the cool blues and lilacs of the formal front garden, through a vibrant prairie garden, into a working kitchen garden, and out to sweeping terraces overlooking acres of Surrey farmland. Nearly 300 plant species were carefully selected to bring richness and seasonal variation throughout the year.

Stoneworld supplied four carefully selected products that together form the complete material palette of the estate’s hard landscaping. Each product was selected for a specific purpose, but as a group they work in harmony, moving the eye naturally from the formal granite arrival, across cooler stone terraces, into the warmer tone of the pool garden, and out to the relaxed gravel edges of the wider grounds.

Our La Roche Luna and La Roche Pearl acid-etched stone slabs form the primary paving surfaces across the estate. Both products feature a refined acid-etched finish that delivers a premium appearance together with reliable slip resistance in all weather. share the same refined, matte acid-etched finish that gives natural stone its most elegant expression, with a surface that is slip-resistant in all weathers and only improves in character as it ages.

La Roche Luna’s cooler, darker tones were chosen for the heart of the estate’s daily life, including the main pathways, terraces, and outdoor kitchens.

La Roche Pearl’s warmer, lighter palette was selected for the swimming pool garden, where its luminous quality around water creates exactly the kind of Mediterranean atmosphere the designer was seeking.

At the entrance, our Silver Grey Granite Setts set the tone from the moment of arrival. Natural granite setts are one of the most enduring materials in British landscaping, and for good reason: they are virtually indestructible, they weather with extraordinary dignity, and their hand-cut character gives a driveway a sense of craftsmanship that no poured or tarmac surface can replicate. Here, laid along the main driveway and formed into a statement turning circle, they establish the estate’s credentials before a visitor has even stepped out of the car.

Finally, our Dove Grey Gravel 20mm quietly and effectively completes the palette. Laid across the wider driveway areas and informal gravelled zones throughout the grounds, it ties the scheme together, softens the transition between harder surfaces and planting, and brings a naturalistic unhurried quality to the estate’s edge that is entirely in keeping with the Surrey Hills landscape.

The Surrey Hills estate is a fitting example of what the right stone can do for a project of this scale. By selecting four complementary Stoneworld products, each chosen for its specific role, tone, and performance the design team was able to create a landscaping palette that is both unified and varied, carrying the same considered quality from the driveway all the way through to the furthest garden terrace. It is exactly the kind of project we love to be part of, and one we are proud to have supplied.
