Sawn, Smooth, Riven or Tumbled? Choosing the Right Paving Finish for Your Patio

Choosing a finish is one of the first conversations we have with clients, because it affects joint widths, grip, maintenance and how the colour appears.

Two patios can use exactly the same stone and still look completely different. The reason is the finish, meaning how the surface and edges have been worked after quarrying. A riven sandstone with handcut or tumbled edges suits a country garden, while the same stone sawn on six sides with a honed face looks crisp and architectural.

Choosing a finish is one of the first conversations we have with clients, because it affects joint widths, grip, maintenance and how the colour appears. In our experience, disappointment with a finished patio usually comes from choosing a finish from a photograph without thinking about how it will perform on site. Below we compare the main options we supply.

What Is Sawn Stone Paving?

Sawn stone paving is machine-cut on all six sides, giving square edges and consistent dimensions. That precision allows narrow joints and a clean, contemporary look that suits modern terraces and courtyards. Surfaces are typically sandblasted for light texture and grip, or honed for a smooth, low-sheen face.

Sawn sandstone paving is particularly versatile. Raj Green is available sawn and sandblasted, Milton sandstone, Fossil Mint and Yellow Mint come in sawn formats. Because the joints are narrow and edges straight, any variation in levels from installation is more visible, so installation quality matters.

Sawn paving is sometimes referred to as smooth sandstone paving – as the top surface looks more smooth than the typical riven finishes in other sandstones and limestones However, for the majority of sawn sandstones we choose the optimum finish to apply to the stone to maintain slip-resistance and ensure they are suitable for outdoors. A honed finish, ground flat to a matt or low-sheen surface that shows the stone’s colour and markings at their clearest. Yellow Mint Honed and White Mint Honed are popular where a light, calm, interior-style terrace is wanted.

Acid-etched finishes offer a middle ground, keeping a smooth appearance with a little more texture underfoot. La Roche Sawn Acid-Etched work well where a terrace links to interior limestone floors. A flamed finish can give the surface of the stone a textured rippled appearance, like on the Kandla Grey flamed sandstone.

What Is the Difference Between Riven and Tumbled Paving?

Riven paving has a naturally split surface with gentle undulations, giving grip and a traditional appearance that hides dirt and wear well. It is usually paired with handcut and tumbled edges for wider joints and an informal look, although we also supply riven paving with a sawn edge for a narrower joint. Raj Green, with tones similar to Yorkstone, is one of our most popular riven stones for period and rural properties.

Tumbled paving has its edges and surface softened so it looks as though it has been in place for decades. Raj Green Tumbled, Kandla Grey Tumbled both suit cottage gardens and heritage settings. It does not give sharp, contemporary lines, and its thickness varies more than sawn stone, so it needs a suitable bedding approach from your installer.

Which Paving Finish Is Best for Your Patio?

Contemporary homes with large glazed doors tend to suit sawn stone paving with a sandblasted or acid-etched face, while period properties suit riven or tumbled stone.  You can compare finishes by edge style on our natural stone paving page, and seeing larger samples at our showroom makes the decision much easier.

Steps, copings and walling look best when the finish is coordinated across the scheme, and we fabricate matching components so the whole package works together. All finishes benefit from periodic cleaning, and our sister company Rob Parker’s Best produces products for different stones. General guidance on natural stone is also available from Stone Federation Great Britain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paving Finishes

What is the difference between sawn and riven paving?

Sawn  paving is machine-cut on six sides with straight edges and sometimes another finish applied to the surface. Riven paving has a naturally split surface and usually handcut or tumbled edges.

Is smooth  paving slippery?

Not at Stoneworld, we choose the optimum finish for the stone to ensure it looks smooth but is still non-slip and suitable for outdoor use. Honed, Sandblasted, acid-etched or flamed finishes are all finishes that are applied to smooth paving in order to maintain slip-resistance

Can I mix finishes on one patio?

Yes, for example, you can choose the same stone but have 2 different finishes to provide complementary contrast – i.e sawn copings next to riven paving or vice versa, provided the stones and colours are planned together from the start.
