Advanced Stone Fabrication Techniques: Waterjet Cutting, CNC Machining and Precision Work
When architects and contractors ask what is achievable in stone, the answer almost always comes down to fabrication. The design ambition on a drawing is only as good as the workshop’s ability to realise it accurately, repeatably and on programme. This guide is written for specifiers, architects and contractors who want to understand how modern stone fabrication actually works, so that they can design and detail with confidence and know what to ask for. It is one of the areas where our vertically integrated approach, combining material sourcing, digital templating and machining under one roof, gives us the most to share.
Rather than talk in the abstract, we have set out the main techniques we use, what each one is for, and the kind of precision it delivers. Where it is useful, we have explained the terms, because the value of understanding fabrication is being able to hold a sensible conversation about tolerances and detailing before a project starts, not after something has been cut.
Why the fabrication method matters
Different techniques solve different problems. Some are about intricate two-dimensional shapes, some about three-dimensional profiles and mouldings, and some about the final surface texture. Choosing the right combination is what keeps tolerances tight, complex geometry accurate and repeated elements identical. Digital templating
Almost every precise fabrication begins with digital templating. In plain terms, this means measuring the site electronically, often with a laser measuring device, to produce an exact digital template as a CAD file rather than a physical timber or hardboard pattern. That template becomes the single source of truth that drives the cutting machinery, which removes a whole category of site risk: pieces are cut to the dimensions the site actually is, not the dimensions a drawing assumed. For architects and contractors this is one of the most valuable stages, because it is where installation errors are designed out before any stone is committed.
Waterjet cutting
Waterjet cutting uses an extremely high-pressure jet of water, mixed with a fine garnet abrasive, to cut through stone. Because it cuts cold, with no heat and very little mechanical stress, it can produce intricate two-dimensional shapes, tight internal curves, precise openings and inlaid details without stressing or scorching the material, and it holds a clean, accurate edge. We can cut stone, porcelain and metal on the waterjet. It is the technique we reach for when a design calls for decorative inlays (brass, steel, bronze into stone), mirrored patterns across a floor, precise service openings, or fine geometric work that would be impossible to achieve cleanly by hand.
CNC machining
CNC stands for computer numerical control, which simply means the cutting tools are driven automatically by a computer following the digital file. Where waterjet excels at flat, intricate shapes, CNC machining works in three dimensions, cutting and profiling stone to form mouldings, radiused edges, cornices, balustrade components, columns and, importantly for us, curved pool copings and staircases. Its greatest strength for a specifier is repeatability: once a profile is programmed, every component comes off the machine identical to the last, which matters enormously on a run of steps, a sweep of coping or a set of matching architectural elements. We combine CNC machining with templating and hand finishing to deliver the complex, non-standard elements that many suppliers simply cannot.
Profiling and finishing
The final character of a piece of stone comes from its finish, and it is worth knowing the main options because the same stone can look and perform quite differently depending on how it is finished. A sawn finish is the flat, matt surface left by cutting. A honed finish is smoothed to a soft matt sheen. A polished finish is worked to a reflective shine. A tumbled finish is gently distressed for a softer, aged look, while a bush-hammered or flamed finish is deliberately textured, which also raises slip resistance for external use. Selecting the finish is as much a technical decision as an aesthetic one, particularly for flooring, steps and any surface that will be walked on when wet.
Bringing the techniques together
Most projects of any ambition use several of these techniques in sequence. A curved internal staircase in Bath limestone, for example, might begin with digital templating of the opening, move to CNC machining to cut each radiused tread and riser to an identical profile, use waterjet cutting for any precise inlay or lighting detail, and finish with hand dressing and a bush-hammered tread for grip. This detail was the kind of coordinated, digitally templated work that lets us take a demanding drawing and deliver it as accurate, ready-to-fix components.
