Stone for Pool Areas: Complete Material Comparison (Sandstone, Limestone, Porcelain)

Choosing the right material for a pool surround is one of the most consequential decisions in any pool build or renovation project, and it is a question we field almost daily from architects, landscapers and pool companies across the country. The surface around a pool has to do more than look attractive in the brochure photographs, it has to perform reliably underfoot when wet, resist years of chlorinated splash-back and UV exposure, and survive the freeze-thaw cycles that a typical British winter throws at it. Because we work across natural stone and porcelain, and because we see the outcomes of these specification decisions on hundreds of pool projects a year, we are in a fairly unusual position to compare sandstone, limestone and porcelain honestly, without pushing you towards whichever material happens to sit in the biggest stack in our yard that week.

This guide sets out the practical differences between the three materials that come up most often for pool copings, pool surrounds and poolside paving, sandstone, limestone and porcelain.

We should say upfront that there is no single “best” material here. Sandstone, limestone and porcelain each solve different problems, and the correct choice depends on the pool type, the surrounding architecture, the budget for ongoing maintenance, and how the space needs to perform in use. A pool deck is one of the most demanding applications in exterior stonework because it combines constant moisture, chemical exposure and, for most of the UK, genuine freeze-thaw risk into a single detail. Natural stone specified for external pool surrounds needs to be assessed against water absorption, frost resistance, salt resistance and flexural strength, with testing referenced against standards such as BS EN 12371 for frost cycling, BS EN 12370 for salt crystallisation, and BS EN 12372 for modulus of rupture. Skipping this assessment is where most pool surround failures originate, not from a poor-quality stone as such, but from the wrong stone being specified for a wet, freeze-thaw environment.

The other factor that gets underweighted in early-stage decisions is drainage detailing. For deck-level pools, the preferred approach is for the surrounding floor to slope away from the overflow channel towards a drain to waste, which diverts wash water away from the pool rather than back into it. For skimmer pools, raising the pool edge with a coping is the equivalent protective measure. This matters for material choice because some stones and finishes handle a fall and channel detail more predictably than others, and it is worth having this conversation with your fabricator before committing to a specific material and thickness.

Sandstone for pool surrounds

Sandstone has long been a favourite for pool decks because its naturally textured surface can deliver good slip resistance, and it responds well to a range of finishes that can add even more grip such as Kandla Grey sawn & sandblasted. That matters more than most people expect on a sunny day around an unshaded pool, where the surface needs to be comfortable underfoot as well as practical in wet conditions. A well-specified sandstone can also offer a characterful, natural look that suits both contemporary and traditional pool settings.

The trade-off is porosity. Sandstone’s absorption rate can vary by quarry and type, and this needs to be factored into both the sealing schedule and the base drainage design beneath the coping. For instance, raj green sandstone is a very dense stone whilst other sandstones like white mint sandstone have a higher absorption rate. For pools in a freeze-thaw climate such as the UK, we would always recommend specifying a dense, pool-suitable sandstone rather than a soft or highly porous option. Some sandstones can also benefit from periodic sealing (3-4 years) with a penetrating impregnating sealant such as Rob Parker’s Best Patio Sealant where the specification calls for it, and this should be built into the maintenance schedule from day one rather than treated as an optional extra.

Limestone for pool surrounds

Limestone earns its place in pool specification through edge durability due to strong compressive strength and, in the right grade, genuinely low water absorption. This is one of the reasons limestone performs so well as coping material specifically, since the coping edge takes the most repeated foot traffic, pool toy impact and general wear of any element around the pool.

Limestone also offers a genuine comfort advantage in sunny conditions, since lighter limestone tones absorb less solar heat than dark stone, though this is true of any light-coloured material and is worth bearing in mind regardless of which stone is ultimately specified. As with any natural stone in a wet or external application, we would always advise confirming the specific stone’s absorption and frost data before finalising a specification, since performance varies meaningfully between different limestone sources.

Porcelain for pool surrounds

Porcelain has become a serious contender for pool surrounds over the last decade, largely because of its very low porosity and no requirement to seal, unlike some natural stones. A well-specified porcelain paver will not need sealing, resists staining from suncream, chlorine and general pool use extremely well, and holds its colour and finish consistently over time. Where porcelain needs the most careful attention at specification stage is the finish itself; not all porcelain is suitable for pool use, and a grip-rated, textured finish that has been properly tested for slip resistance in wet conditions is essential rather than optional for any surface within reach of pool splash-back. Also, porcelain is only available in maximum 20mm thickness, whereas usually pool copings are specified at 40mm+ thickness for comfort when in the pool and aesthetics. You can overcome this minimal thickness by optiong for a overlip drop down edge on the coping, where we fabricate a 40mm thick downstand onto the edge of the porcelain, but this entails extra cost. Some customers choose to have a thicker natural stone coping for the comfort, and then match with a porcelain paving stone if they want porcelain as the bulk of the poolscape.

Where porcelain occasionally comes up short against natural stone is in perceived character and heat behaviour, since dense, dark porcelain can retain more surface heat than an open-textured stone like sandstone, although lighter porcelain tones largely close this gap. For projects where a one-stop-shop approach is preferable, being able to specify porcelain and stone from the same supplier, matched for scale, tone and detailing across the whole scheme, tends to simplify both the design process and the eventual installation. Slip resistance and finish selection

Whichever material is chosen, the single detail that most affects safety around a pool is the finish, not the base material itself. UK guidance on slip resistance testing is used across the trade to assess how a given finish performs when wet, and this should be a formal part of any pool surround specification rather than an assumption based on how a sample feels dry in a showroom. Sandblasted, acid-etched and naturally textured finishes generally outperform polished finishes in wet conditions across all three materials discussed here, and this is worth confirming with test data rather than a visual assessment alone.
